This Graphic Novel concept was used when fulfilling a pre-quarter assignment for comics class, and expanded upon for my final project (button below). I was given less than a week to design 3 characters, provide 4 point turnarounds of all three, and at least two environments with the characters acting naturally within them.
For this project I pulled a middle grade graphic novel concept that I had been formulating that featured big kaiju, body swapping, and heartfelt coming of age plotlines. I used the concept for a test mini comic, reachable through the button below!
I designed Piper, the main protagonist, to resemble myself at the age of 12. Thin, awkward, and anxious about everything including the kitchen sink. Bob was designed based on Pokemon professors and Dr. Serizawa from Godzilla (1954). Finally, Giragon took inspiration from Toho Kaiju like Godzilla and Titanosaurus, but mainly used a fusion of Giraffe and Sea Dragon elements for her design detailing.
As for their respective environments. I imagined the city in which they lived a port city, a mixture of Houston and Tokyo. My goal for Piper's room was, for lack of better words, to make it look straight out of a 2012 Justice for girls magazine. For Giragon's lair, I took inspiration from underground aquafers and hot springs, and tried to imagine what amenities the modern kaiju would desire.
